Cheat the Glow this Autumn/Winter in 5 simple steps

With the drop in temperatures and the increasing use of home heating, our skin can become dull, grey and lack lustre, the complete opposite of the youthful glow that we are all striving for! Here are the steps and some of the products to achieve glowing skin.

1. Preparation is everything

The first thing with any makeup application is prepping the skin. When trying to achieve that dewy glow we need products that plump, hydrate and brighten.

Hyaluronic is an acid that helps attract moisture to the skin and can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and reverse the effects of dehydration caused by lack of water, heating at home and in the workplace or incorrect skincare. Using a moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid will work wonders at re-plumping the skin, and achieving a nice, heathy-looking glow that is otherwise lacking in dehydrated skin.

To maximise the effects, try using an exfoliating acid e.g. lactic acid or glycolic acid beforehand to remove any dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.  This allows the Hyaluronic Acid to reach deeper in to the dermis, enhancing its performance.

Products we love are the Declare Oceans Best Hyaluron Triple Booster €59.50 and The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid €6.99.

Bonus tip: Incorporate a sheet mask into your skincare routine to pack in more moisture to the skin and give it a beautiful glow. Our top picks are the Seoulista Beauty Brightening Instant Facial €8.99, packed with Vitamin C and AHAs (never use more than 1 AHA product in one day) these sheet masks exfoliate and hydrate the skin revealing a brighter, more uniform complexion. If you’re on the go try Add On Beauty Dry Mask Selfie Glow €18.00, a revolutionary dry mask which, once activated, delivers 91-94% active ingredients to the skin, making them 2.5 times more effective than other brands on the market. If that’s not enough, there is literally no mess and it can be used up to four times.

2. Prime:

For a long lasting makeup application, always prime the skin first. Primers create a second layer between the skin and makeup, ultimately blurring imperfections and smoothing the skins surface. For a dewy look, opt for a primer with highlighting particles which eliminates dull skin and gives the skin a natural, healthy glow. Products we highly recommend for this job are Flormar Double Radiance Primer €12.95, La Girl Luminous Glow Skin Illuminator €10.50 and Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Beauty Base €24.95

3. Foundation:

A good base really does make a huge difference to your overall appearance and every woman should own one – even if you wear it only on special ccasions. A great foundation’s job is to perfect the skin, making you appear clearer, brighter, more youthful and never like you’ve been dipped in paint! A suitable foundation depends on your skin type, your skin colour, your needs and grooming levels. When choosing a suitable colour for your skin decide whether your skin type best suits a bb cream, tinted moisturiser, sheer foundation, liquid foundation, mineral foundation powder, cream foundation or powder foundation.

Some of the brands in store range from lightweight, medium to full coverage foundation with illuminating filters include La Girl Pro Coverage Illuminating Foundation €12.95, Flormar HD Invisible Cover Foundation €11.95 and Note Rejuvenating Foundation €9.95. All three are of medium coverage but can be easily built to a fuller coverage whilst maintaining a natural feel and look to the skin.

If needed, apply Note Cosmetics Full Coverage Stick Concealer €4.95 to hide any stubborn imperfections.

Bonus Tip: If concealing dark circles, try colour correcting with L.A. Girl Pro Conceal Colour Correctors €6.95 under your concealer.

Light Yellow corrector: Corrects dullness caused by blue/purple undertones and brightens under eye circles in fairer skin tones.

Yellow Corrector: Corrects dullness and brightens under eye circles in medium to darker skin tones.

4. Conceal, Highlight and Define:

As with your foundation you should also choose a concealer which radiates luminosity. The eye area is one of the first areas that shows signs of fatigue and dehydration so always prep with a good, hydrating eye cream to start. This will prevent your concealer from showing up any signs of dry patches and settling in to any fine lines and wrinkles. Concealers such as L.A. Girl Pro Conceal €6.95 are creamy and lightweight which keeps the area hydrated and crease resistant. If you’re looking for a more prominent glow, try Note Perfecting Pen €8.95, which contains light reflecting particles.

To keep the look soft, always go for a cream contour over powder. Cream contours are less harsh looking on the face and produce a more natural, healthy finish. This would be especially recommended for older clients. Products such as Flormar Contour Stick €9.95 and Sosu Contour on the Go €12.95 would be beneficial for this task.

Follow up with a dab of Aimee Connolly Beauty Base on the highpoints of the face and lightly dust a transparent, loose powder to any areas prone to oiliness or creasing such as the T-zone and under the eyes. For an extra glow apply a powder highlighter like BPerfect MMMMitchell Subzero Palette €36.99 back over where you first applied the cream highlighter. Concentrate your highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones, the tip of the nose, the cupids bow on the lips and above the highest point of the brows. For more mature skin, instead of applying the highlighter to the top of the cheekbones, try apply to the tops of the apples of the cheek, as it has a more lifting and youthful effect.

5. Finishing Touches:

If you want to go the extra mile, finish the look off with a shimmer eyeshadow such as the BiaBelle Bronzed Honey Eyeshadow palette €24.95.  These eyeshadows are buttery soft and create a subtle glow on the eyes. Alternatively, if you want something that stands out, try Jordana Ticia Base and Sparkle shadow pots €19.75.  These 2 in 1 pots create the most beautiful glow on the eyes and are super easy to use. Add a bit of highlighter to the inner corner of the eye and brow bone and you are good to go.

A pop of colour is always needed to warm up the face, again try using a product that promotes a glow to the skin. Blushers such as Milani Baked Powder Blush €11.50 and Flormar Terracotta Blush-On €11.95 are amazing as they contain a slight iridescence and can really make the cheeks pop.

No makeup is ever complete without a swipe of lippie. To keep the look fresh, choose a lipstick with moisturising properties  Even try a touch a gloss on the middle of the lips to create a slight plumping effect.

Finish the look off with a spritz of setting spray. Setting sprays are great for longer lasting makeup applications and, if you prefer to use more powder products for your highlight and contour, it helps to get rid of that powdery, heavy, cakey feel on the skin. For drier skins we love to use Ella & Jo 3 in 1 Hyaluronic Skin Mist €20.00 or for more luminosity to the skin, Milani Make It Dewy Setting Spray €14.50 and Makeup Revolution Pro Fix Illuminating Fixing Spray €7.99 to add a touch of sparkle to your end result.

All products are available in store and online.
